Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Protect your Etropo account with an extra layer of security using Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). This guide explains how to enable, use, and manage 2FA on your account.

What is Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-Factor Authentication adds an extra security layer to your account by requiring two forms of verification when you sign in:

  1. Something you know: Your password
  2. Something you have: A unique 6-digit code from your authenticator app

Even if someone obtains your password, they won’t be able to access your account without the code from your authenticator device.

Before You Begin: You’ll need an authenticator app installed on your smartphone or tablet. We recommend Google Authenticator, Authy, 1Password, Microsoft Authenticator, or any other TOTP-compatible authenticator app.

Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication

Step 1: Navigate to 2FA Settings

  1. Sign in to your Etropo account
  2. Click on your profile in the top navigation
  3. Select Settings
  4. Click on the 2FA tab

Step 2: Enable 2FA

  1. Click the Enable 2FA button
  2. In the dialog that appears, enter a name for your device (e.g., “iPhone 15”, “macOS Passwords”)
    • This name helps you identify which device you’re using if you add multiple authenticators
  3. Click Continue

Step 3: Scan the QR Code

  1. A QR code will be displayed on your screen
  2. Open your authenticator app on your phone
  3. Tap the ”+” or “Add” button in your authenticator app
  4. Select Scan QR Code
  5. Point your phone’s camera at the QR code on your screen
  6. The authenticator app will automatically add Etropo and begin generating 6-digit codes

Step 4: Verify Your Setup

  1. Look at your authenticator app - you’ll see a 6-digit code that refreshes every 30 seconds
  2. Enter this 6-digit code in the verification field on Etropo
  3. Click Verify & Enable

That’s it! Two-Factor Authentication is now enabled on your account.

Signing In with 2FA

Once 2FA is enabled, your login process will change slightly:

  1. Go to the Etropo login page
  2. Enter your email and password
  3. Click Sign in
  4. New Step: You’ll see a verification screen asking for a 6-digit code
  5. Open your authenticator app and find your Etropo account
  6. Enter the current 6-digit code
  7. Click Verify
  8. You’ll be signed in to your account

Important Notes:

  • Each code is only valid for 30 seconds
  • Each code can only be used once
  • If the code expires while you’re entering it, wait for the next one
  • If you have multiple authenticator devices set up, you can use code from any of them

Managing Your Authenticator Devices

Adding a Backup Device

We strongly recommend adding a second authenticator device as a backup. This way, if you lose your primary device, you can still access your account.

  1. Go to Settings2FA tab
  2. Click Add Another Device
  3. Enter a name for your backup device (e.g., “1Password”, “Mobile Backup”)
  4. Follow the same QR code scanning and verification process
  5. You can now use either device to generate codes

You can add up to 2 authenticator devices total.

Using Multiple Devices

If you’ve added multiple devices, you can choose which one to use when signing in. After entering your password, the 2FA verification screen will show which device to use (e.g., “Enter code from: iPhone 15”). If you want to use your other device instead, click Use different authenticator and enter the code from your chosen device.

Removing a Device

For your security, removing an authenticator device requires additional verification:

  1. Go to Settings2FA tab
  2. Find the device you want to remove
  3. Click Remove
  4. You’ll be asked to verify your identity by entering a 2FA code
    • You can use code from any of your enrolled devices (including the one you’re about to remove)
  5. Enter the 6-digit code and click Verify
  6. Confirm the removal

If you’re removing your only authenticator device, you’ll see a warning that 2FA will be completely disabled. After confirming, you’ll sign in with just your email and password.

Changing Your Password with 2FA Enabled

If you have 2FA enabled, changing your password is extra secure:

  1. Go to SettingsPassword tab
  2. Click Change Password
  3. If needed, you’ll be asked to enter a 2FA code to verify your identity
  4. Enter your new password and confirm it
  5. Click Update Password
  6. Your password is changed, and you’ll stay signed in (no need to log in again)

This is different from accounts without 2FA, which require email-based password resets.

Best Practices

  1. Set up a backup device immediately - Use a different physical device (e.g., phone + tablet) and store one authenticator somewhere safe
  2. Never share your 2FA codes - Etropo support will never ask for your 2FA codes
  3. Keep your authenticator app secure - Use a passcode/biometric lock on your device and don’t take screenshots of QR codes or secret keys
  4. Update your devices if needed - Getting a new phone? Add it as a second device first, then remove the old one

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use SMS instead of an authenticator app?

Currently, Etropo only supports authenticator apps (TOTP). SMS-based 2FA is not available.

What happens if I lose my phone?

If you have a backup device set up, you can still access your account using that device. If you don’t have a backup, you’ll need to contact support to regain access.

Can I have more than 2 devices?

No, the current limit is 2 authenticator devices per account. This is typically enough for a primary device and a backup.

Will 2FA slow down my workflow?

Most users find that entering a 6-digit code adds only a few seconds to the login process. The security benefits usually outweigh this minor inconvenience.

Can I use the same authenticator app for multiple accounts?

Yes! Most authenticator apps can store codes for multiple services (Etropo, Google, GitHub, etc.). Each service will have its own entry with its own codes.
