# Fiscal Year Calendar

Not every organization runs January to December. Your fiscal year calendar tells Etropo which month your financial year begins in, so quarters line up with how your company actually reports.

## Setting Your Fiscal Year

1. Go to [Budget Settings](https://app.etropo.com/budgets/settings) in your sidebar — the **Fiscal Year** tab opens first
2. Pick a calendar from the **Fiscal year start** dropdown
3. That's it — the change saves immediately

Only organization administrators can change the fiscal year calendar.

### Presets

Four common calendars are ready to pick:

| Calendar | Quarters |
|---|---|
| **Calendar Year** (default) | Q1: Jan–Mar, Q2: Apr–Jun, Q3: Jul–Sep, Q4: Oct–Dec |
| **Indian Fiscal Year** (April) | Q1: Apr–Jun, Q2: Jul–Sep, Q3: Oct–Dec, Q4: Jan–Mar |
| **Australian Fiscal Year** (July) | Q1: Jul–Sep, Q2: Oct–Dec, Q3: Jan–Mar, Q4: Apr–Jun |
| **US Federal** (October) | Q1: Oct–Dec, Q2: Jan–Mar, Q3: Apr–Jun, Q4: Jul–Sep |

### Custom Start Month

If none of the presets match, choose **Custom** and a **Starting month** picker appears. Select any month of the year, and quarters are calculated in three-month blocks from there.

Whichever option you pick, the resulting quarters are shown right under the dropdown, so you can confirm the split before moving on.

## What It Affects

The fiscal year setting applies across your whole organization — every budget, every report:

- **Quarter labels** everywhere Q1–Q4 appear
- **Dashboard charts** and period grouping
- **Variance analysis** when you compare by quarter
- **Exports** to XLSX and Google Sheets

Changing it doesn't move any of your data. Your line items and monthly amounts stay exactly where they are — only the way months are grouped into quarters changes.

## Best Practices

- **Set it before you build your first budget.** Nothing breaks if you change it later, but quarter-based reports you've already shared will regroup.
- **Match your finance team.** The whole point is that a quarter means the same thing in Etropo as it does in your company's reporting, so budget conversations don't need translation.
